Job description

Applied Physics Specialist (AI Training)

About the Role

What if your years of physics expertise could directly shape how AI understands the physical world? We're looking for PhD-level Applied Physicists to probe the limits of cutting-edge AI models — designing problems that expose where these systems break down, and providing the rigorous feedback needed to fix them.

This is a fully remote, flexible contract role. No prior AI experience needed — just deep mastery of physics and the ability to communicate complex ideas with precision.

  • Organization: Alignerr
  • Type: Hourly Contract
  • Location: Remote
  • Commitment: 10–40 hours/week

What You'll Do

  • Design advanced, open-ended physics problems at PhD qualifying exam level — requiring multi-step reasoning and rigorous mathematical derivation
  • Author comprehensive "golden" solutions with flawless step-by-step logic, precise constants, and accurate unit conversions
  • Audit AI-generated simulations, proofs, and explanations for physical consistency — identifying where models "hallucinate" violations of first principles
  • Provide structured, expert feedback to improve AI reasoning around boundary conditions, conservation laws, and physical constraints
  • Work independently and asynchronously — fully on your own schedule

Who You Are

  • PhD completed or in final stages in Applied Physics, Physics, Engineering Physics, or a closely related field
  • Deep mastery across the core pillars of physics: Classical Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Statistical Mechanics, and Quantum Mechanics
  • Exceptional ability to explain complex physical phenomena and mathematical derivations in clear, structured English
  • Uncompromising eye for detail — units, scientific notation, dimensional analysis, and logical proof structure
  • Self-motivated and consistent when working independently
  • No prior AI or tech experience required

Nice to Have

  • Experience with data annotation, scientific dataset evaluation, or quality assurance for research outputs
  • Proficiency with tools such as MATLAB, COMSOL, Python (NumPy/SciPy), or similar
  • Background in research, academia, or applied engineering environments
  • Familiarity with AI tools or language model evaluation as an end user

Why Join Us

  • Work on high-impact AI projects alongside the world's leading AI research labs
  • Fully remote and flexible — work when and where it suits you
  • Freelance autonomy with the structure of meaningful, intellectually rigorous work
  • Gain firsthand exposure to how cutting-edge large language models are trained and evaluated
  • Contribute to ensuring AI systems respect the fundamental laws that govern our physical world
  • Potential for ongoing work and contract extension as new projects launch
