Job description

Applied Physics Specialist (AI Training)

About the Role

What if your deep expertise in physics could directly shape how AI understands the physical world — from quantum mechanics to thermodynamics — for millions of users worldwide? We're looking for PhD-level Applied Physicists to put cutting-edge AI models to the test, exposing the gaps in their physical reasoning and helping build systems that actually respect the laws of nature.

This is a fully remote, flexible contract role built for researchers and specialists who want meaningful, intellectually stimulating work on their own schedule. No prior AI experience required — just a rigorous command of physics and an uncompromising eye for scientific accuracy.

  • Organization: Alignerr
  • Type: Hourly Contract
  • Location: Remote
  • Commitment: 10–40 hours/week

What You'll Do

  • Design advanced physics problems — craft PhD qualifying exam-level challenges requiring multi-step logical reasoning, mathematical derivation, and deep physical intuition across domains like quantum mechanics, electrodynamics, and thermodynamics
  • Author rigorous ground-truth solutions — produce precise, step-by-step "golden responses" where every physical constant, unit, and logical step is exactly right
  • Audit AI-generated reasoning — evaluate AI outputs for physical consistency, identifying where models hallucinate physics or violate first principles like conservation of energy and momentum
  • Provide structured feedback — deliver detailed, actionable feedback that improves how AI models handle boundary conditions, symmetry arguments, and physics-informed constraints
  • Work independently and asynchronously — fully on your own schedule

Who You Are

  • Holds a PhD (completed or near-final stage) in Applied Physics, Physics, Engineering Physics, or a closely related field
  • Deep mastery of the core pillars: Classical Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Statistical Mechanics, and Quantum Mechanics
  • Exceptional ability to explain complex physical phenomena and mathematical derivations in clear, structured written English
  • Uncompromising precision with units, scientific notation, dimensional analysis, and the logical flow of a proof
  • Self-motivated and consistent when working independently
  • No prior AI or data annotation experience required

Nice to Have

  • Experience with data annotation, scientific dataset evaluation, or quality assurance for technical content
  • Proficiency with computational tools such as Python (NumPy/SciPy), MATLAB, or COMSOL
  • Background in research-level benchmarking or academic problem authoring
  • Familiarity with AI language models as an end user

Why Join Us

  • Work on high-impact AI projects in collaboration with leading AI research labs
  • Fully remote and flexible — work when and where it suits you
  • Freelance autonomy with the structure of meaningful, intellectually challenging work
  • Gain firsthand exposure to how cutting-edge large language models are trained and evaluated
  • Potential for ongoing work and contract extension as new projects launch
