Job description

Applied Physics Specialist (AI Training)

About the Role

What if your deep expertise in physics could directly shape how AI understands the physical world? We're looking for PhD-level Applied Physicists to stress-test the reasoning of cutting-edge Large Language Models — probing their grasp of quantum mechanics, electrodynamics, thermodynamics, and beyond.

This is a fully remote, flexible contract role. No AI background needed — just mastery of physics and a rigorous, analytical mind.

  • Organization: Alignerr
  • Type: Hourly Contract
  • Location: Remote
  • Commitment: 10–40 hours/week

What You'll Do

  • Design advanced, open-ended physics problems at the level of PhD qualifying exams — requiring multi-step logical reasoning and mathematical derivation
  • Author rigorous "golden" solutions with precise step-by-step workings, ensuring every physical constant, unit, and logical transition is exactly right
  • Audit AI-generated simulations, proofs, and explanations for physical consistency — identifying where models hallucinate violations of first principles
  • Provide structured, expert feedback to improve AI reasoning around boundary conditions, conservation laws, and physics-informed constraints
  • Work independently and asynchronously — fully on your own schedule

Who You Are

  • PhD completed or in final stages in Applied Physics, Physics, Engineering Physics, or a closely related field
  • Deep mastery across the core pillars: Classical Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Statistical Mechanics, and Quantum Mechanics
  • Exceptional ability to communicate complex physical phenomena and mathematical derivations in clear, structured English
  • Uncompromising precision with units, scientific notation, dimensional analysis, and logical proof structure
  • Naturally detail-oriented and systematic in evaluating technical content
  • No prior AI or data annotation experience required

Nice to Have

  • Prior experience with data annotation, scientific dataset evaluation, or quality assurance systems
  • Proficiency with technical tools such as MATLAB, COMSOL, or Python (NumPy/SciPy)
  • Research background in a specialised physics subfield

Why Join Us

  • Work alongside world-leading AI research teams on genuinely frontier problems
  • Fully remote and flexible — work when and where it suits you
  • Freelance autonomy with the structure of meaningful, high-impact technical work
  • Get rare, hands-on exposure to how advanced LLMs are trained and evaluated
  • Contribute to ensuring that AI reasoning stays grounded in the fundamental laws of the universe
  • Potential for ongoing work and contract extension as new projects launch
